Monitoring Food Affordability

Published on Wednesday, 9 April, 2025

ODPH in partnership with Public Health Ontario (PHO) has released a new report: Food Insecurity and Food Affordability in Ontario / L’insécurité alimentaire et l’abordabilité des aliments en Ontario.

This report is the first to combine public health unit data on food costs to create a provincial overview of food affordability in Ontario. It examines the high prevalence and impacts of household food insecurity in Ontario, highlighting the risk faced by households dependent on social assistance. It presents regional estimates of the cost of a basic nutritious diet and highlights the unaffordability of food and a basic standard of living for these households. This report also provides evidence supporting income-based policy solutions to address food insecurity.
