Ontario Student Nutrition Programs provide nutritious meals and/or snacks to school-age children and youth and are funded, in part, by the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS).

Programs are encouraged to follow the 2020 Student Nutrition Program Nutrition Guidelines and:

• Create an environment where all children and youth feel welcomed

• Encourage children and youth to pay attention to their hunger and fullness cues

• Offer foods with the most nutritional value

• Safely handle, store and prepare foods and beverages

• Create simple menus for nutritious breakfasts, morning meals, lunches, and snacks

Members of ODPH School Nutrition workgroup developed these Guidelines on behalf of the Ministry. They reflect current research and best practices in healthy eating and align with Canada’s Food Guide (2019). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020, promotion and implementation of the 2020 guidelines was postponed.  All programs will be expected to use them beginning with the 2021-2022 school year.

For more information on student nutrition programs, contact your local health unit or visit Student Nutrition Ontario to find a regional contact.

NOTE: ODPH has been advised by contacts at MCCSS that as the Ontario Government moves to the new Ontario.ca platform they have new guidelines for the types of information that can be posted on ministry sites.  Program resources, like the 2020 SNP Nutrition Guidelines, are distributed to Lead Agencies and are available to anyone on request but will not be posted on the ministry website.  The 2016 version will soon be removed from the site.
