These online learning modules were created to support child care providers in planning and preparing healthy food for children in their care. They reflect current best practices for creating supportive nutrition environments in the child care setting and will help providers meet the food and drink requirements set out in the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 (section 42 of Ont. Reg. 137/15). For more information on child care nutrition, contact your local health unit.

 

NUTRITION RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HEALTHY EATING IN CHILD CARE SETTINGS (Online Learning Modules)

For child care operators, supervisors, cooks and staff who are working in the child care setting, these online courses will help you understand and apply the nutrition recommendations outlined in the Menu Planning & Supportive Nutrition Environments in Child Care Settings - Practical Guide. The Practical Guide includes information for child care providers on menu planning, food and beverages that should be served, appropriate portion sizes for different age groups, sample menus and templates as well as strategies to create a supportive nutrition environment.

The online course consists of four online learning modules. It is recommended to complete them in order. The modules are best viewed on a desktop computer. 


Part 1 - Introduction and Choosing Food

For child care operators, supervisors, cooks and staff who are working in the child care setting, these online courses will help you understand and apply the nutrition recommendations outlined in the Menu Planning & Supportive Nutrition Environments in Child Care Settings - Practical Guide.

Part 2 - Amounts to Prepare (for cooks) 

Learn about recommended portion sizes to inform how much food to prepare, family-style meals and feeding young children positively.

Part 3 - Planning and Revising a Menu 

This module will cover menu planning for child care settings. This includes what to offer at meal and snack time and menu planning considerations when feeding young children.

Part 4 - Creating a Supportive Nutrition Environment and Resources

This module will include information on how to support children to become competent and capable eaters. This includes maintaining the Division of Responsibility in feeding and creating positive mealtimes. Additional resources for child care staff will also be reviewed.
